The City Chapter, the partnership of Armagh libraries, will welcome writer and community arts facilitator Jan Carson to give a reading for World Book Day 2023 on Thursday 2 March 2023 at 7.30pm in Armagh City Library.
Jan Carson is based in Belfast. Her first novel, ‘Malcolm Orange Disappears’, was published in 2014 to critical acclaim, followed by a short story collection, ‘Children's Children’ in 2016, and two flash fiction anthologies, ‘Postcard Stories’ in 2017 and ‘Postcard Stories 2’ in 2020.
Her second novel, ‘The Fire Starters’ in 2019, won the EU Prize for Literature and was shortlisted for the Dalkey Novel of the Year Award. Her work has appeared in numerous journals and on BBC Radio 3 and 4. She has won the ‘Harper's Bazaar’ short-story competition and has been shortlisted for the BBC National Short Story Award and the Seán Ó Faoláin Short Story Prize. Jan also specialises in running arts projects and events with older people, especially those living with dementia.
Cathy Donnelly, Armagh City Library representative on the City Chapter says, “The emphasis for World Book Day 2023 is on making it your World Book Day. Jan Carson’s writing, including her most recent book, ‘The Raptures’, helps us to do this by exploring themes familiar to us all; such as ‘how tragedy can unite a small community - and tear it apart’. We thank our funder for making this event possible and look forward to welcoming a capacity audience at the event.”
This event (funded by the Arts Council for Northern Ireland) is free to attend, with donations most welcome for the continuing work of The City Chapter. Prior booking is requested by contacting Armagh City Library on telephone 028 37524072 or by e-mail Armagh.library@librariesni.org.uk
